TANGAIL, Apr 1: Traders in the district are expecting about Tk 300 crore sale of handloom-made traditional Tangail Saree on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and Pahela Baishakh.
Targeting these two occasions, weavers are manufacturing sarees in a busy manner.
Traders said, though sarees are produced in the districts Bajitpur, Krishnapur, Belta, Putiajani, and Bolla area of Kalihati, Pathrail of Delduar is known as the capital of Tangail Saree.
After the corona virus pandemic, this year the Taingail Saree bazaars will get into momentum, they added.
They further said, compared to last few years since the Covid-19 situation, the trading of Tangail Saree will be higher. At present, hot-tolerant sarees are being sold.
To meet demands of wholesalers and customers, saree-makers are passing busy time, they maintained.
A woman weaver, Ruma Ray said, "Earlier we would cut yarn by hands. Now it is cut by machine. Compared to present time, our work-wage was higher before, and the profit was also higher. Now monthly Tk 1,000 is counted extra for electricity bill and blade. Getting no other work, we are doing this work in a compelling condition."
Weaver Musa Khan said, "The work pressure has increased a bit after Covid. But despite the work pressure, our wage has not been raised. That is why many makers have shifted to other works."
Trader of Tangail Saree Minhaj Mia said, they are making sarees since before Ramadan and stocking these; this year half silk, mixed-cotton, pure silk, and cotton sarees are being made mostly; before one week of Ramadan, traders started to come to purchase sarees at wholesale rates from different areas.
A woman customer from Savar, Dhaka Fatema Tabassum said, "Taking trouble, I have come to purchase pure Tangail Saree. I have purchased seven pieces of Tangail Saree for myself and my family members. Qualities are good while prices are within capacity. On the occasion of different festivals, I come to purchase Tangail Saree."
Trader Humayun Sikdar from Narayanganj said, "As prices are comparatively cheaper, I come to purchase Tangail Sarees on different occasions, and sell those in my area.
President of Tangail Saree Businessmen Association Raghunath Bosak said, "Usually the demand of Tangail sarees increases several times on the occasion of Eid. That is why the production has been increased. In the last year, 74 lakh pieces of Tangail saree were exported to India, fetching a profit of about 24 lakh dollars."
Director of Tangail Chamber of Commerce & Industry Polash Chandra Bosak said, this years political situation is better than last years; so sales of traders will be very good.
Tangail sarees are favourite in Dhaka and other districts of the country, he added.
He further said, in total, the sale will stand at Tk 300 crore, assisting traders to stand around.
Most of the whole sale of sarees was made in the first week of Ramadan, and at present, customers are coming from different areas of the country to purchase at the retail level, he maintained.
